Planning

1) Initial Team Meeting
For the first meeting, I chose a few songs in which I could use for my music video for this project. These are the music videos I had selected:
  1. Us - Regina Spektor
  2. Day Old Hate - City & Colour
  3. Snuff - Slipknot
  4. Lazy Eye - Silversun Pickups
  5. Right Where You Want Me To Be - A Day To Remember
After selecting which songs I wanted to create a music video for, I held a survey on the social networking site Facebook. After reading through a few comments from 15 people, this was the result:
  1. Us - Regina Spektor (selected 2 times)
  2. Day Old Hate - City & Colour (selected 7 times)
  3. Snuff - Slipknot (selected 3 times)
  4. Lazy Eye - Silversun Pickups (selected 0 times)
  5. Right Where You Want Me To Be - A Day To Remember (selected 3 times)
After creating this survey, I decided that by process of elimination I would work with the song Day Old hate by City & Colour.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2) Research of Artist

The artist I have chosen is City & Colour.

City & Colour is the recording alias for Canadian singer/songwriter Dallas Green. Dallas Green is most commonly known for playing guitar and singing in the band Alexisonfire. Green plays mostly acoustic and folk music, and on tour is accompanied by Canadian indie rock musicians, such as Daniel Romano and Spencer Burton.

Green originally started releasing songs over the internet for his fans to download. Eventually after it been requested by numerous people, he rewrote a select few songs and released them as the album Sometimes. The full length debut was released 1 November 2005 to a good reception. Green has also said that the "best music for [him] is sad music", influenced by the songs he has written. On 12th February 2008, Green released his second album, Bring Me Your Love, and a wide array of instruments are included on this album in comparison to Sometimes, featuring instruments such as harmonica, banjo, drums and lap steel; this gave Bring Me Your Love a more of a folk influenced sound. This album features collaborations by other artists (such as Gordon Downie on "Sleeping Sickness"). In January 2010, City & Colour embarked on a tour, and played new songs "Silver and Gold" and "Oh Sister" along with a select few covers. In interviews, he hinted that he would be recording a new album soon. Eventually, on 7 June 2011, Green released Little Hell. They released a single to accommodate this called "Fragile Bird", and this was City & Colour highest charting single, hitting No. 1 on the Canadian rock/alternative chart. It was eventually announced that Alexisonfire would break up, as Dallas wanted to focus on City & Colour because balancing the two bands had become too difficult.

Awards:
  • People's Choice Award - 'Favourite Artist' for "Save Your Scissors" (2006)
  • Chart Magazine '2006 Artist Of The Year'
  • Alternative Album of the Year for Sometimes (2007)
  • Songwriter of the Year for "The Girl", "Sleeping Sickness" and "Waiting..." (2009)
  • Songwriter of the Year for "Fragile Bird", "We Found Each Other in the Dark" and "Weightless" (2012)

The song I have chosen for my music video is "Day Old Hate", from the album Sometimes. The whole meaning of the song could be seen as a relationship gone wrong, and how it affected him. The whole song could be defined like this:
"So let's face it, this was never what you wanted" - the relationship was never supposed to get this serious.
"But I know it's fun to pretend" - it was fun to pretend that they were made for each other, or in love.
"Now blank stares and empty threats are all I have" - he could be thinking about exposing the other person for who they really are.

"So drown me, and if you can" - he could mean that he wants to drink his way out of the love.
"Or we could just have conversation" - he may want to talk to the person because he wants answers.
"I fall, I fall, I faulter" - he is slipping into bad ways from excessive drinking.
"And I'll find you before I drift away" - he may be saying he would choose her over the alcohol.

"Now you still speak of day old hate" - the other person is still clinging onto something he did in the past.
"Though your whole world has gone up into flames
And isn't it great to find that you're really worth nothing
And how safe it is to feel safe" - he could be talking about how everything is going downhill because the other person has left.

"It's the things we do to stay alive" - he could be referring to the things we tell ourselves after a relationship of this caliber goes bad.

3) Influential Music Videos of Chosen Genre

1) Comin' Home - City & Colour
I believe this music video would inspire me as it has a rather sad theme to it, and that's how I feel mine should have. The music video is filmed in black and white, which could connotate towards sadness of the song (the song refers to a relationship being strained due to constantly being away from home because of touring). I like the common use of superimposition of things; for example, an image of the woman in the video is superimposed over an image of Dallas, and this could be shown to represent how he is missing her. Even though City & Colour is sorted under the acoustic and folk genre, it could also be sorted into the rock genre. This video fits the connotations of a rock genre as it shows Dallas playing guitar which could showcase his musical talent, and you get close-ups of his face throughout the video to show his emotion towards the song.

2) No Transitory - Alexisonfire
Even though Alexisonfire are not the same genre as City & Colour, I thought this band would be relevant as Dallas Green plays guitar and sings for them.  I believe this music video would inspire me as it includes elements which I would like to incorporate into my music video. The black and white theme is used in the correct manner, as the song is about depression and suicide and it fits to the song's sad vibe. What I like about the music video is the use of editing, effects and transitions. Wipes are used in specific parts of the video (for example, at the beginning a wipe is used after a full shot of the band to guitarist Wade MacNeil then to another shot of the band), and I like this as is showcases fully the band's talents and it not only shows the band together, but each individual member. Superimposition is also used in the video; for example, there is a shot of Dallas singing one of the verses, and while he is singing bassist Chris Steele appears superimposed over the image, along with other members appearing over the current image. Some connotations from this video which fit in with a normal rock video are that you see the whole band playing their instruments and showcasing their talents. You see Dallas and vocalist George Pettit singing into microphones and close-ups used to show this, which also showcases their talents. There aren't any mosh pits, however you see the band jumping around, which could show that they are getting into their music.

3) I Will Follow You Into The Dark - Death Cab For Cutie

This music inspires me, as there is a clear link between the narrative and the song; the narrative is also what I enjoy about the song. The song is about how the singer, Ben Gibbard, will follow the person he is singing about when they die. The music video is Gibbard's character in an apartment, and a hole starts to form in the floor over a few days; the growing hole could be shown to represent the growing emptiness he feels after his partner has died. At the end of the video he falls into the hole but ends up standing up in it, and this could be shown that even though he feels lost without the person in his life, he can stand on his own two feet through it and he will come and find the person when it is his time. The costume and props in the video just show how Gibbard's character lives every day life while this hole continues to grow. I enjoy how plain the costume and setting is, as it shows you don't need a big set or a costume that stands out to create a noticeable narrative. Some connotations of a rock music video used in this video are that you see Gibbard playing his instrument, which shows his talents first hand. He isn't shown to be singing into a microphone, however the camera zooms in on his face while he is singing to show the emotion in the song.

4) Individual Textual Analysis
Music Video Textual Analysis: Muther - letlive.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5) Annotation of Lyrics

Verse 1

So let’s face it, this was never what you wanted
But I know it’s fun to pretend
Our blank stares and empty threats
Are all I have
They’re all I have

Our blank stares and empty threats” = the main character could have a vacant expression towards the camera to represent "blank stares"
Sad mood in the song, and the verses seem to build up to a climatic chorus

Chorus
"So drown me, and if you can
Or we could just have conversation
I fall, I fall, I faulter
But I found you before I drift away"

"So drown me..." = could have references to water
"...before I drift away" = the character could end up floating away somewhere if in water

Verse 2
"Now you still speak of day old hate
Though your whole world has gone up into flames
And isn't it great to find that you're really worth nothing
And how safe it is to feel safe"

"...you're really worth nothing..." = the character could be alone at this moment in time to represent that they feel like nothing
"...how safe it is to feel safe" = the character could be smiling when they are alone, to show they feel safer by themselves

Ending
"The things we do just to stay alive
The things we do just to keep ourselves alive"

I personally interpret the song in a variety of ways. I see the song in general being about a relationship, however the the verses and chorus in different manners.
The first verse seems to be about how Dallas Green and his partner constantly argue and how bad the relationship has gotten ("So let's face it, this was never what you wanted/But I know it's fun to pretend" could mean that they never wanted to be in the relationship, however they believe it's 'fun' to pretend to be in love. The second verse could be interpreted as that the partner continues to reference something that happened in the past ("Now you still speak of day old hate"), and this ends up bringing him down ("And isn't it great to find that you're really worth nothing"), but he feels safer knowing he has locked his heart away ("And how safe it is to feel safe").
The chorus seems to reference alcohol frequently. For example, when the song goes "So drown me, and if you can", it could be referencing that Green is going to 'drown' his sorrows in alcohol. He feels like he wants to talk, however he can't because of the alcohol ("Or we could just have conversation") and this ends up destroying him ("I fall, I fall, I faulter"). However, he feels like he wants to talk before he ends up falling into a drunken spiral ("But I found you before I drift away").
The ending could reference what he tells himself to keep himself together after the end of a relationship like this ("The things we do just to stay alive").

6) Questionnaire

For this task, I had to develop a questionnaire to find out how I could create a music video appropriate for my target audience. These are the questions I created;

1) What is your favourite music video?

2) What is your favourite music video out of the following;
Comin' Home (City & Colour), Sail (AWOLNATION), Time of Your Life (Green Day), Miserable At Best (Mayday Parade)

3) Do you believe that a music video inspires you to buy a song?

4) How do you watch music videos?

5) How often do you watch music channels (if at all)?

6) What genre music are you into?

7) How do you listen to music?

8) Listen to Day Old Hate by City & Colour. What do you think could be included in the music video?

After posting the questionnaire on Facebook, here are some of the responses;

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7) Second Team Meeting

From the results of my questionnaire, I found out a variety of things;
  • I found out that people enjoyed a music video with a narrative; most people chose Sail by AWOLNATION as their favourite video, and out of the three chosen, this had the most narrrative to it
  • The audience which took this questionnaire enjoy a variety of music, ranging from rock and metal, to drum & bass and dubstep, to jazz and pop
  • The audience who took the questionnaire mainly watch music videos through Youtube and TV
  • They also listen to music through Youtube and iTunes
I have learnt that to get my audience watching my music video I will need to place it on Youtube and share it amongst social networks to get people to watch it.

I believe that because the people I asked enjoyed a music video with a narrative, I will need to interpret some of the lyrics. For example;
  • "So drown me, and if you can", "But I found you before I drift away" could be interpreted towards alcohol, or in the music video, just towards water
  • "Though your whole world has gone up into flames" could have a reference to fire in it
  • "And isn't it great to find that you're really worth nothing" could have the main character all alone
  • "Now you still speak of day old hate" could have a couple arguing

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8) Mise-En-Scene Survey

Locations

For the locations, I had to think long and hard about where I wanted to film the music video. After careful thought, the three locations I chose to include in the survey were;

  • A swimming pool - because the chorus lyrics involved references to water, I thought a perfect place for this music video would be a swimming pool.
  • A forest - seen as the song is an acoustic song, I thought that a slow paced song would match a quiet environment.
  • An empty field - referring back to the survey I took and also the previous choice, it seems like an peaceful location to record the video in.
Costume
At first I wasn't sure about costume since City & Colour is labeled under the acoustic/folk genre. However, this is what I chose to include in the survey;
  • Casual clothes - since it is not a specific genre like rap or rock, I though just the clothes that were being worn at the time would be appropriate.
  • Smart black clothes (waist coat, shirt etc) - since the song is quite a dark song, I thought a smart attire which was completely black would fit in well.
  • General black and/or blue clothing - by wearing these colour clothes, the black and blue could represent sadness.
Props
I wasn't entirely sure about what props I could've used in my music video, however after considering it for this music video, these are the props I chose for the survey;

  • An umbrella - if it is raining at the scene (which hopefully it might be, to represent sadness), this could be used to try and protect the character from the rain
  • A guitar - to show the person's talents, an instrument would be needed, so this would be a suitable prop for the video.
  • No prop at all - the video could be based around the one person singing, so a prop may not be needed at all.
After asking an amount of people, these are the results I got;

10) Pitch Ideas to a Focus Group

My target audience was universal since the song had no explicit lyrics or has no connotations which could contain any references to sex or drugs, so there is no age limitation on my target audience for this music video. I gathered together five people from different age ranges and different genders and pitched ideas. My agenda for the focus group was;

- Start off with a welcome to the participants
- Use an ice breaker
- Explain why I am making a music video, and what song I am doing
- Talk about the band and my interpretations of the lyrics
- Play the song to the audience
- Explain my rough idea of how the music video will go and follow that by asking what they felt abot the concept
- Ask if anyone had any ideas of what I could include and what could be added

Five people attended the forum, and also myself. The forum was made up of family members with an age range going from 13 to 70, as I felt like there was no appeal to a specific age range.

I started off with the welcome, and followed with an ice breaker; I asked my participants to assign themselves to a house hold item and explain why (for example I said I was a toaster because I like toast). I did a brief introduction about the band and the song, and showed everyone a picture of Dallas Green so they knew who he was. Following the introduction of the song, I played the song so they could get a feel of what I wanted to achieve in my music video. After the song finished, everyone agreed that there was no age/gender limitation on the style of music. I gave everyone my interpretation on the lyrics and what I thought they meant. I followed this by running through the rough idea of the synopsis of what I wanted to do with my music video. After that, I asked for feedback. Two members of my family agreed that they could conjure up images in their head after my depiction of my music video. One of the two also said that my explanation and interpretation of the song helped them understand it more. However, two members said that it invoked imagery, however because they have not seen the video or themselves they didn't know how to give an opinion. One member also said that because they did not know the song, they found it hard to visualize. However all agreed that the use of black and white would give an atmosphere of melancholy to the video that they felt was needed.

Goodwin's Conventions

Conventions
Example
Relationship between visuals, lyrics and music
I used many references to water throughout the music video in link with the chorus lyrics (“So drown me, and if you can/But I found you before I drift away”) by having him stand by a lake and lie in a bath.
Close-ups of the artist(s)
I did include individual shots of both artists, alongside shots with them together (the shots together are mainly around the middle of the song, and the individual shots are more prominent near the end of the video).
Reference to looking
I included references to looking by putting over-the-shoulder shots in specific places so it seems like we are peering over the character’s shoulder. Also, at the end I included a shot of looking in at the two characters in the coffee shop so it was like the audience was looking in.
Voyeuristic treatment of the female body
I didn’t include much of a ‘voyeuristic ‘ treatment or apply the male gaze towards the female in my music video, however I made sure her role and emotions were known by use of facial expressions and camera angles.
Intertextual references to other media texts
I didn’t include any references to any other media texts or any other music videos by other artists, as I thought I would prefer to keep all devised material original than use other ideas that have already been made.
Genre conventions
The genre conventions I included were the use of instruments. As City & Colour come under the acoustic genre, I thought it would be deemed appropriate to include an acoustic guitar in the video. Also, seen as the song is quite a sad song, I thought the use of black and white in the video would be appropriate.

13) Location & Prop List

List of Props I will need
  • A guitar - I will need a guitar for the performing part of the music video, to show the talents of the people performing.
  • A pebble - The pebble is a reasonably vital prop - even though it is only needed for a few seconds (to be thrown into the water) I wanted to included this, as seeing it sink represents how the character feels; being drowned under his sorrow.
List of Locations I will need
  • A lake - a giant aspect to the music video is involving water scenes, so I thought the easiest (and safest) places to access where I could film water based/related scenes could be a lake.
  • A park (bench) - I decided the performance scenes would be based in a park, as even though it is based in somewhere 'fun', it isn't able to cheer the character up from his depressed state.
  • A bathroom - another aspect of the music video involving water is a bathroom, as the character sits/submerges himself in a bath of water. I chose this because it connotates the water theme while still giving the concept that he is drowning himself.
·  A street (mainly near Birches Bridge) - I will be using the street in two different perspectives; once for the argument between the main character and the female character, and once for the bridge scene where the character contemplates suicide. I chose this because the second time shows him repeating the places he visited with the female character. I mainly want Birches Bridge, as it overlooks a train station and it is local so I can get to it easily.
  • A coffee shop - I wanted to include a coffee shop in here when the main character sees the female character to show that she has moved on from him, but it also helps him move on. I need one with a reasonably big window out front so the main character can peer in and see her with another man.

15) Permission Letter

Here is the letter I have created to send to the record label regarding getting copyright to use the song in my video;

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to Dine Alone Records to request permission to use a song from one of your bands in a project for school.
My name is Josh, and I am in my final year of Sixth Form before I leave to pursue further education. I am currently taking Music Technology, Performing Arts and Media Studies at school, and the project I am working on is for Media. Our task was set that we have to create a music video for a song, and I chose a song from one of the bands that are signed to your label.
The band I chose was City & Colour. I am a musician myself, and I am a giant fan of the band and hugely influenced by Dallas Green, so I thought it would only be appropriate to choose a song written by him. The song I chose was from the album Sometimes called ‘Day Old Hate’. I chose this song because it is one of my favourite songs and it speaks to me in great depth, regarding a personal situation I have been through.
I would like your, along with Dallas Green’s, permission to use ‘Day Old Hate’ in my Media project. I will be fully planning out and going through the process of creating a music video. I will be directing it myself (along with hopefully having a cameo in it), and with the help from some friends, I will create the final product in a few weeks.
Thank you for taking the time out to read this letter, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Josh Carter

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

16) Problem Solving

There are a variety of problems which could wrong on set. However, there are ways in which we could combat these.

Organization
·         - Not having permission to film in location
One of the main problems could be that the locations I want to film in may not allow us to record. However, all but one of the locations are public areas (and I will use my house for the bathroom scene). I will personally contact a coffee shop myself to gain permission to record.
·         - Forgetting to pick up equipment/leaving equipment behind
Because I am working all by myself, there may be days where I forget to pick up recording equipment, or even leave some behind at the shoot. My plan of attack to combat this is to plan out what days I will be recording so I do not forget to bring equipment. Regarding leaving equipment I may leave behind, I will create a check list of every item I get given (regardless of how small or big it may be) and make sure I check everything off before I leave. If I still worry I may still leave something behind, I will only bring what is needed and leave everything else at my house.
·         - Returning equipment late/incomplete
Returning equipment late and having the work unfinished is a potential hazard, however I will allocate specific days to find out when everyone is free and available to work so everything can be done on time. However, if the deadline has been hit and I still haven’t finished recording, I will plan out a few extra days in which I can record the finishing scenes.
·         - Not knowing what you’re doing on the shoot
No knowledge of what will be happening on the day could be a potential problem. What I will do is take my storyboard/shot list with me wherever we go to record so I know what shots will need recording. I will plan out which area I will be recording in on the day of the shoot.
·         - Coming back to school with hardly any footage/time wasting on shoot
There is the possibility of coming back with hardly any or no footage at all recorded on a specific day due to time wasting. I do want to have fun on set with the actors, however I will try and avoid getting hardly any footage at all costs; I will plan out where I will record, ask permission (if permission is needed in the location) and make sure everyone is available on the day in question.
·         - Actors turning up late/not turning up
I have all but one of the actors’ numbers (however the female actor is the main character’s girlfriend in real life, so I can contact her through him) so I will make sure that all the actors are available on each day. If not, I will plan out for when we are all available for recording next.
·         - Absence from school
If I am absent from the school at the time, I will plan out recording for as soon as I am well and get back into school so I can catch up with anything I have missed.
·         - Not pre-empting the weather
The weather is a crucial aspect of the video. However I have already thought of this in advance; if starts raining, this will work well on shoot as the song is a sad song. If it starts heavily raining then we will have to retreat and record another day. In the unlikely event it starts snowing, I can also use this to my advantage, as we will still be able to record and use the snow to show the absence of colour from the person’s life.

Communication
·         - Not explaining yourself properly
The actors on set may not hear me properly and may get some of the actions wrong. What I will do is clearly explain each shot to them and how I envision it to look. I will also explain why I chose a specific shot, location or action if questioned.
·         - Losing patience with other people
Some actors may choose to mess around on set, or other people may choose to try and mess up the shot. I will calmly explain what I need done and that I do not want them to mess about. If people appear in the background and try to ruin the shot, I will calmly approach them and tell them that this is an A level project which needs to be completed. If they still do not leave, I will go and shoot another scene somewhere else and come back when they have left.
·         - Actors not answering their phones
I will make sure I have explained to each actor that I will need them on a specific day for shooting the video, and make it clear they need to keep their phone available at all times on the day. If they do not answer their phone, I will go looking for them. However, if I cannot find them, I will record the following day to catch up with recording.
·         - Actors getting bored/cold/hungry/annoyed
There is a concern that actors may eventually get bored and mess about. I aim to keep all the actors active at all times, so they are moving around and doing something productive instead of standing around and doing nothing. I will also say to bring a bit of money just in case they get hungry and want something to eat.
·        - Teachers being left in the dark on changing plans
If any plans are changed regarding filming on the day, any shots or anything necessary which the teacher needs to know, I will make sure they know as soon as possible so they know what’s happening at all times.

Technical
·         - Don’t know how to use equipment
There could be the problem that no one in the group knows how to use the equipment. As I am the only person in the group, the problem is sorted. There are some shots where I perform with Sam, however I will show whoever else is with us and not on set how to operate the camera, the tripod and when to start and stop.
·         - Not checking camera settings
Camera settings may have been altered by the last person who had access to it. I will ensure that all settings are restored to normal, or altered to my specific recording requirements then changed back after all recording has finished.
·         - Poor lighting
Poor lighting is a risk during recording, as some shots may need to be recorded at night. If the lighting is poor during this time, I will try and bring some source of light (torches, etc) to lighten up the shot. If this option does not work, I will record the following evening when it is a bit lighter.
·         - Shaky camera
The possibility of the camera being shaky could wreck the shot. I will try and use a tripod at all times to enable the stability of the camera to get the perfect shot.
·         - Batteries are not charged
The main cause of concern on the day of recording would be that the batteries are charged. The night before recording, regardless of what charge it was on, I would charge it up fully so no matter what it wouldn’t give out.
·         - Forcing tapes or batteries and breaking the camera
Because the camera is someone else’s property, I will treat it like my own and make sure no damage comes of it. However in the unlikely event that the camera did end up getting damaged and ended up breaking, I would pay for a replacement one.

Group Dynamics
Because I am in a group all by myself, I believe that I would have no troubles with group dynamics, or have any problems sorting out who will be allocated which jobs or ‘spur of the moment’ meetings.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

17) Brand Image

I found an image which could suit my brand image well. This is what I found;

I chose this because you cannot tell whether the man is happy, or he is about to jump. The black and white also connotates the sadness of the song.

I believe the colours that could connotate this song well would be black and white. The song is a sad song, and the black and white could help represent this. Another colour which could work well with this song could be blue. With a hint of blue behind it, you could connotate that as either the sadness of the song or the fact that it references water multiple times.

City & Colour is an acoustic folk band; even though the song isn't very folky, I would like to show the genre of the band. Connotations for the folk genre could be bright and colourful, guitar based and rural. Images that could show this could be the country side or fields. I could put an image of one of these in black and white to connotate the song meaning.
